October Oasis Blog

No sooner had I expressed concerns in the September blog that infection rates had moved from 600 to 6,000 cases, did the government state that due to test results not getting counted the cases had shot up to over 26,000.  Now the average cases are approximately 20,000 a day giving over a million positive cases every 8 weeks.  Gloomy times ahead!

Still we should be continually grateful that the East continues to have relatively few cases.

Bangers and Mash – 2007

As I write this blog I like to think back to better times at Oasis. Traditionally we always celebrated October at Oasis with the Bangers and Mash evening.  An opportunity for our members to have a sit down 2 course waitress served meal. A chance to dress to impress! It was started when Barbara Ross, our founder, ran Oasis from her house, not far from the venue we use today.

Steph, Barbara and Peter

On those night Barbara would, with the help of her daughter Steph and her good friend Peter, serve a meal to upwards of 25 people on an extended table spanning the entire length of her lounge and dining room.  It was a logistical exercise of epic proportions!

When eventually Oasis moved to our new venue, this tradition was continued, with the help of our resident chef, Vicky.

This month’s oasis outing was to Bressingham Gardens, just outside Diss. Did you know Diss is the only place in Norfolk that disappears when you approach it!  Just four of us attended, and the gods were kind to us with a substantially dry day apart from the torrential downpour as we drove home. Coffee and chat flowed.  Well done again to our scheduler Theresa. Look out for November’s oasis outing, maybe at a venue near you!

Congratulation to both Gemma and Michelle who celebrated their 21st birthdays again this month.  If you celebrated one then congratulations! They are both well and safe.

Our monthly zoom meeting went well, and it was lovely to see Billie, from across the pond in St Louis. We had a good number of people popping in and out during the evening, as well as our regulars.  It was nice to see Petra and Lorraine in Halloween themed hats to celebrate what would have been our theme at our St Georges venue.

When this post goes out it will be less than 60 days to our first virtual Christmas.  In times gone by we would be thinking about our outfits for the Oasis Christmas meal, and the numerous dinner party we were planning with friends and family.  Instead it’s time to get our Christmas outdoor lights, checked, cleaned and ready to brighten up the night!

Oh, by the way Happy Hallowe’en.

Stay well and Safe

Beccie x
