October Visit – Ticket To Ride

Clang, clang, clang went the trolley
Ding, ding, ding went the bell
Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings
From the moment I saw it I fell

Can you fall in love with an inanimate object?
When the ‘it’ in question is a bus, or trolleybus, or even a classic car at the East Anglia Transport Museum, beware, it will be love at first sight.

The museum located in Charlton Colville is a little gem and highly recommended, especially by Oasisadvisor! Accordingly, Rachel, Jaqui, Geri, Lauren, Serena, Phyllis, and Barry, all members of The Oasis Omnibus And Shunters Association, assembled on Sunday, 24th September, for an afternoon of bus-related activities.

Chug, chug, chug went the motor
Bump, bump, bump went the brake
Thump, thump, thump went my heartstrings
When the bus arrived, I could feel my heart shake.

In bright early autumn sunshine, we took a nostalgic trip down memory lane and were greeted by an array of beautifully restored vehicles in scrumptious liveries of red, blue, burgundy, green, and cream that whisked us back through time. For Serena, it was the very same trolleybus that she rode to school in Poole, when she was a young girl. For me the it was the Greenline bus with Harlow on the signboard and the Reliant three wheeler, that transported me to the happy years in Tamworth when I worked for the company in the early eighties. Each of us had our stories to tell, and our memories to relive.

Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer
Plop, plop, plop went the wheels
Stop, stop, stop went my heartstrings
As the bus started to go then I started to know how it feels, when the universe reels

The buses ran on a strict timetable, and you needed to keep your wits about you as buses thundered by and taxis and vans dodged in and out. There were plenty of bus rides, and the narrow gauge railway allowed us to explore the recently expanded site.

As is customary our visit was punctuated with the inevitable cuppa and cakes, and we were impressed by the friendliness and expertise of the museum staff and volunteers. These wonderful people were readily available to answer questions and share their knowledge, making the visit both enjoyable and informative.

Not wishing to miss the last bus, it was time to head for home and our nostalgia bath was over for another day. Thank you to our little gang for making a glorious day. For those of you unable to join us, find time to head east to this fab museum. If you reach the sea you’ve gone to far but don’t worry, Lowestoft does have beautiful beaches!
Climb aboard The Magic Bus , enjoy the ride to find out where Oasis will alight next.
