Thursford Steam Engine Museum

Thursford Steam Engine Museum was a perfect venue for Oasis ladies to share a sunny day in April.
Sunday 14th, Serena, Geri, Petra, Amy & Sue, Lilly, Lauren, Andrea and myself met in the Barn Café for refreshments and chat, was a lovely brightly decorated café with nice friendly staff.

After an hour or so in the café we dispersed into the museum, as soon as I entered I just thought wow, the building was so spacious, well lit and full of interesting things to marvel at.
Firstly met with some gleaming showman’s steam engines, immaculately painted and polished.

In the distance music could be heard from one of the mechanical organs so went to investigate, such wonderful machines, each one a fantastic work of art and mechanical marvel.

One at a time each organ was fired up right up until it was time for Robert Wolfe to hit the keys on the Wurlitzer organ on the main stage, thirty minutes of tunes from an instrument of a bygone age, a pleasure to see and hear.

It was one o’clock and time for lunch (bum-de-dum, de-dum)(sorry, I’m an early Genesis fan) but food had to wait, everyone was gathering around the Gondola ride, Petra, Amy and Sue sat on the vintage ride all wearing big grins. The ride was joy to watch.
The second ride to operate was the Gallopers, built in 1896 by Savages, more fairground fun.

After the rides finished we returned to the café for lunch, there was a decent menu choice and the food itself was quite lovely, a Mediterranean quiche and salad for me.
As usual during our days out we spent lots of time in the café chatting and enjoying each others company. Some of us missed the second Wurlitzer show but after lunch there was still time to have a more thorough look around the museum and experience more of the mechanical organs being operated.
Came across another Savages machine which was built at a factory which was just a couple of miles up the road from where I live, charity shops and a Costa are located on the site now.

Sadly the café closed at 3:00 pm so we didn’t get to have our customary drink and natter before leaving for home, we did however finish up in the empty café for our hugs, kisses and goodbyes.
A day thoroughly enjoyed by all.

See you all again soon.
