June Oasis – Serena remembers Barbara Ross and where she put her photograph.

Saturday 15th June finally felt like summer was just around the corner, as we enjoyed a long Oasis evening together without putting the heating on! Not bad as we approached the longest day.

We all have our stories to tell, but nobody tells her story quite like Serena! On Saturday, Serena told us the tale of ‘The Lost Photograph‘, partly autobiographical and partly a little history of our Barbara, and how Barbara touched the lives of so many Oasisfolk, including that of Serena. All wrapped up in a conundrum, we learnt about Serena and strict Welsh heritage, her stylish Aunt, her connection with Venice and how Photoshop is almost a substitute for the real thing. Thank you Ms S, you didn’t leave a dry eye in the house. And the morel of our story…. don’t throw anything away!

Now as I said, we all have our own stories, and if you would like to tell yours, or have some help telling yours, please contact the editor.

Of course in life, there is a yin to every yang, so after dinner, we lurched into a rather random Spring quiz. Using a deliciously loose interpretation of Spring and an even looser scoring system, we bounced from Young’s Modulus to Public Enemy, from Tigger to the suspension medium of Andrea’s Motor and back again! After a tense, often confusing competition and a vague scoring system, ‘The Douglas’ won the evening on a tie break. Clearly fans of Bruce Springsteen. The moral of our story… stay on the right side of the very cantankerous host!

The moral of Oasis is work hard and play hard, so big thanks to everyone who made such a wonderful evening. On a member’s food night, we always have too much, thank you one and all for your generosity. Especially you Billie! Thank you to Petra, Serena and Billie for helping set up and to Rebecca and Rhian for washing up, to Anna for answering questions despite not having a tele, to Andrea and to ‘Tailend Jaqui’ for the final countdown.

Earlier in the day, some of our Oasis creatives had their work displayed in The Forum, as part of a Queerfest event. Especially exciting was the debut of photographs from Hana, plus work by ML, Georgina, Serena and Andrea. Thank you to the famous five for you help in preparing your work. The Oasis promo department will continue to look for new opportunities for some additional Oasis limelight.
