August Outing – A step back in time.

On a warm summers day, Sunday 4th August 2024 witnessed an impressive sleuth of Oasisers make our now annual step back in time. The Mid Norfolk Railway’s 40’s Weekend provides a delightful plunge into the past, with a vivid and immersive experience of the 1940s. Set against the charming backdrop of this wonderful heritage railway; history is a brought to life with an impressive blend of authenticity and entertainment.

From the moment we stepped onto the platform, we were transported back to the wartime era. The stations are meticulously decorated with period posters, bunting, and vintage paraphernalia.

The sight of the MNR’s resident Steam locomotive, BR Standard 4MT 80078, accompanied by guest locomotive GWR Large Prairie 4144 loaned by the Didcot Railway Centre beautifully restored to their former glory, added to the nostalgic ambiance. The sound of the train whistles and the chugging engines set the perfect tone for our day out.

Participants, Oasisers and visitors alike embraced the 1940s theme wholeheartedly, donning period-appropriate attire. The presence of military re-enactors, complete with authentic uniforms and equipment, adds a layer of realism to the event. From civilian outfits to glamorous wartime fashion, the attention to detail in the costumes is commendable.

With the line once again full opened, we were able to steam in style from Dereham to Wymondham Abbey, where we were able to enjoy our lunch at The Green Dragon.

Everywhere you looked there were attractions to feast the eye, at every station, to the display field in Wymondham where we able to enjoy the wonderful retro-styled singer Bombshell Rheanne, The Vintage Soprano reviving those wartime favourites. It’s such a wonderful day; so if you missed this year’s outing, make certain that you pop the MNR 40’s Weekend in your 2025 diary right now. It’s always the first weekend of August.

Thank you to Beccie, Katie, Geri, Billie, Amy, Dee, Tina, Lauren B, Lauren C, Hana, Claire, Jules, Jane, Miss Marple, Amy C and Sue for sharing such a perfect day.

Huff, huff, huff goes the engine, simply wonderful.
