For those of us of a certain age, the Pavlovian response is Rubbish! On Saturday 17th February 2024 our Oasis meeting was skilfully led through the labyrinth of rubbish by the wonderful Sarah Clarke, the charismatic Information & Education Manager of FCC Environment.

In a presentation that combined humour, facts and stuffed toys (recycled of course), Sarah tackled the enigma of green, brown, blue, black bins and recycling centres, debunking myths and legends along the way.
Lauren triumphantly stood atop the Podium Of Waste after acing Sarah’s quiz. Notes to self: refrain from engaging in a futile battle with aerosol cans, involving a hammer and nail – just toss them in the recycle bin! Preowned items are good, and now most recycling centres in feature a re-use shop, full of wonderful things and golf clubs! Help reduce water footprints by popping-in during your next visit.
Following this enlightening session, twenty-five hungry souls indulged in a feast featuring fish and chips, pies, mushy peas, spring rolls, battered sausages, red, blue and tartar sauce ….. hungry yet? Followed by decadent cheesecake with chocolate and strawberries …. definitely hungry now! Special thanks to the FCC (fish and chip champion) duo of Theresa and Rachel, Theresa for her heroic washing-up efforts, and Petra for handling the finances. I’m please to report there was very little waste.
A night of recycling wisdom, delicious food, and camaraderie, defiantly not a waste. Thank you Sarah,
Oasis has enjoyed a busy February with lots of activities, thanks to the amazing Rachel of Queerfest there have been lots to see and do. We attended the donation station for the Museum of Transology, where Serena did sterling work for the admin team and we were joined by Vicky making here first Oasis appearance. We enjoyed the LGBT+ History Club talk by LGBT+ activist Paul Burston, we marvelled at Andrea’s photographs which were part of the spectacular Interrupt Art Exhibition, and we spent an interesting afternoon at The Assembly House in the beautiful Novere as part of the Queerfest Connect enjoying tea and cake. Thank you to everybody who joined in and had fun,
We at Oasis strive to provide opportunities for all of our membership to express their Trueselves, in a safe and enjoyable environment; if you would like to join in but are a little nervous, be assured that there will always be someone there to hold your hand.
Bring Me Sunshine and hope we will see you all very soon.
