August Oasis – About and Around with Oasis

Despite the parched weather, the Oasis grass is always green and continues to thrive. Our grass is greener; not because we’ve had more rain, but because you, our Oasis family, nurture it, look after one another, and make sure there is always somewhere for people to grow.

While everything around us may be turning brown, Oasis remains a place of colour, friendship, laughter and support. Regardless of this crazy world, our garden is always flourishing and beautiful, and there’s always room for another blade or two of grass to join us! Talking of which, we were delighted to welcome new members Wendy and Sophie to our August meeting on Saturday 15th August 2026, when we held our traditional summer quiz. This year, we had an attempt at recreating the Oasis version of the BBC’s Only Connect.

What is the connection between The Newbies, The Water Diviners, Norfolk N’Chance, Answerless and Jane + Steph Squared? They were the team names of the five intrepid teams who bravely took on the challenge. While the rules were vague and the scoring system vaguer; we think the winners were N’Chance! However, the rules of Oasis mean that everyone is a winner; just like every Oasis member who comes along to our meetings. The Oasis College of Smart is clearly full of very smart Oasis members!

Earlier in the day, Oasis had attended King’s Lynn Pride, where we spent a delightful few hours at The Walks, enjoying the sunshine, meeting old friends and making new ones. We were also proud to wave the Oasis banner as we joined the Pride parade, marching together from the town centre and making our presence felt.

One of the things we particularly enjoy about taking Oasis out into the wider community is the warm welcome we receive wherever we go. Whether it is from Pride organisers, other community groups or members of the public, we consistently find that Oasis is recognised, welcomed and valued. It is a reminder that Oasis is much more than our meetings. We are part of a much wider community, and it is important that we are visible, represented and able to share our message of friendship, acceptance and mutual support. We believe Oasis has become a respected and important part of the community, and it is a huge pleasure to continue building on Barbara’s legacy.

In the flow of the Oasis year, our annual visit to The Mid Norfolk Railway 40’s Weekend is one of our highlights. Our 2026 trip was no exception and a good time was had by all, and a tasty and generous lunch was had by some at The Green Dragon. The weather served up a warm and pleasant day but sadly, the tinder dry conditions meant no steam. Whist the substitute vintage diesels are still awesome machines, they are no match for the majestic steam locos. If you’ve never ridden the MNR, pop the first weekend of August 2027 in your diaries now! Oasis will return.

What is the connection between good times, wonderful friends, an amazing community and silly quizzes – Oasis of course! Our Oasis, never to be found on the wrong side of the tracks.
See you the ‘Last Night Of The O’Proms’ on Saturday 19th September 2026; prepare to promonarde.
Love
